The Season of Giving is upon us. To celebrate, we’d like to thank everyone involved in our successful Give to the Max Day 2014. Give to the Max Day takes place each year in November for Minnesota. GiveMN provides a useful website to help generous people find a cause and donate support. On November 13, Minnesota prompted its citizens to donate to their favorite cause, and you all did! Minnesota raised a record-making $18 million for Minnesota nonprofits and schools this year.
Big Brothers Big Sisters depends on support from people like YOU. So, we wanted to find out, why do you donate?
Debbie Clausen is an active member in the Big Brothers Big Sisters community. While working for Thrivent Financial, she helped host a recruitment event. On top of all her support, she is also a Big Sister. Debbie became a big when she was inspired to take action at her company’s recruitment dinner. “The moment that really gave me the final push into committing to the process of becoming a big, was the piece that tugged at my heart the most; people who are hurting and in need.” Debbie specifically remembers the story of a boy who was never matched, and never forgot 27 years later. “My heart broke,” She says. “It moved me to take action, and this past May I was matched with my Little.” Debbie continues to work hard to influence her peers to get involved in Big Brothers Big Sisters, especially since her Little has a brother who is still looking for his Big. With her continued efforts, Debbie reports, “Our office is also hosting a holiday party for the waiting Littles in December. Our hope is that the adult volunteers will see the value of becoming a permanent Big, and the kids will make some meaningful contact.”
When asked why she donates, Debbie said, ”I don’t donate to be recognized, but because I am passionate about helping where I can. Give to the Max Day was just another opportunity to make an impact.”
You don’t have to be a Big to support Big Brothers Big Sisters, either. Jamie, another Big Brothers, Big Sisters supporter said that she chose to donate because she was looking for a “strong, committed, and caring staff that are truly focused on their mission. I believe we all have a civic responsibility to make our communities better, whether that’s giving your time, talents, or resources. Investing in Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Minnesota has a profound impact on our communities. We are ensuring that youth have the support their need to be successful in life. And as we know, these youth will go on to become the leaders of our communities.”
We’d like to thank everyone who got involved with Give to the Max Day 2014, especially to Jerry S. who was actively involved on Twitter. Every donation counts towards growth in our community. We look forward to the end of a successful year, and the beginning of a new one with many new opportunities for Big Brothers Big Sisters!
