A Big Thank You

Lonely. Sad. Dark. Those were the words that nine-year-old "Jacob" used to describe his feelings to his mother. She was overwhelmed.

"It would be critical for Jacob to have a positive role model," she told us. He loved math, science and sports - especially baseball. But he didn't have anyone he could share them with. His father had been absent - spending more time in jail than with his son.

We knew a Big Brother could be the change Jacob needed. We had seen it so many times. But could we find a match? It's not always easy, especially for boys. Boys sometimes spend up to two years on a waiting list. So much can happen in that amount of time.

The day before we were to call Jacob's mom to tell her that we could grant her wish, she called to share that the challenges had mounted. Seeking attention, Jacob had lashed out at a college worker at his after-school program. This was not like him. Through tears, she said this match could not have come at a better time.

Jacob's "Big" said he knew that exact feelings Jacob was experiencing. He had felt the same way as a child.

In the few short months Jacob and his Big Brother have been matched, Jacob's mom has already seen a change.

We know it's just the beginning. We're imagining a day when Jacob becomes a Big.

This magical, meaningful change would not have been possible without the support of people like you - people who care enough to give to Big Brothers Big Sisters.

YOU are the spark that ignites every Big Brothers Big Sisters match. YOU are a par at of each and every step. YOU are with us when a mom watches her son meet his Big for the first time with tears in her eyes. She whispers "thank you."

That thank you is for people like you - people who donate so generously of their time and money to make matches possible.

Without you, Big Brothers Big Sisters would cease to exist. There wouldn't be an office, a staff, a program. And kids like Jacob would still be waiting for the presence of a caring adult in their lives to make such a difference.

Because of YOU, a mom didn't lose hope. Because of you, another Big sees how his time can impact a life - forever. And he's changed, too.

Your gift to Big Brothers Big Sisters makes the power of mentorship possible for ninety children who are waiting to be matched with a Big Brother, Big Sister, Big Couple, or Big Family.

Won't you give generously to make this life-changing magic happen?

We've made it convenient for you to give. Go to and donate with your credit card. Or you can call Big Brothers Big Sisters at 320.253.1616 and we'll take your information over the phone.
